Final Assignment - I AM pt 1

I am an Athlete

- My idea for capturing what it means to be an athlete at NDB is to take action shots of a Notre Dame lacrosse game. Lacrosse is a new sport at NDB and I thought it would be really interesting to capture a student playing in a game. On Thursday April 26, NDB will be playing Priory at Priory so I plan on going to that game to take pictures. The game starts at 4:00 when the sun begins to set and since Priory is covered in nature and trees I think it will be a really amazing to take a picture of a player with a bokeh background of Priory.

I am Loved

-Notre Dame prides itself on being a accepting and loving community and when I think of being loved at Notre Dame I think of a group of friends laughing and smiling with each other. I want to capture a group of girls in their Notre Dame uniforms laughing, hugging and smiling at each other on the father downy garden. My other idea that Mrs. Kuntz came up with was taking a picture of Clifford the dog surrounded by Notre Dame students. Clifford is famous at NDB and what better way of showing what it means to be loved at NDB than a bunch of girls showing Clifford loved. But the difficulty with that is knowing when to shoot since I'm not entirely sure when Clifford comes to school.

Assignment #33 - Triptych

I want to tell the story of new life. Spring is right around the corner and new life is being born all around us. When you think of new life more often than not you may think of a baby being born or a puppy for example but my idea of new life is about how nature is reborn in Spring. Leaves grow again and flowers bloom. For my story concept I captured a series of a flower blossoming to represent new life.

Assignment #30 - Through the lens in an entirely new way…

David Hockney is an England born man who is most famous for his paintings of pools. He moved to Los Angles in the 1960's where his career in photography and painting blossomed. Hockney also painted the interiors and exteriors of homes that became very popular. In 1970 he created his first "joiner" photograph. He photographed a scene and pieced the pictures together like a puzzle. After his photography exploded during the 70's he returned back to painting in the 80's.

Assignment #29 - On Your Own

I thought it would be a really cool idea to photograph a series of people in San Francisco. SF is one of the most diverse cities in the world and their is a large population of unique individuals that make the city so interesting. I also personally love candid photographs and capturing someone in their daily life whether its walking to the store or driving to work. This assignment I took a bunch of picture of people and SF and this is what I got.

Assignment #24 - TED Talk

TED Talk

This TED Talk video made understand the importance of photography. Before I always viewed photography as only an art form, a way to express yourself. What I didn't know is that photography is not only a way of expressing yourself but its a way to send a message out to the world. A fashion photographer photographs fashion in a unique way that draws customers in. They want to send a message out as to why you should want to buy their products over another companies products. A teenage boy might post a shirtless pic online to send a message out that he's available for the taking and a teenage girl might do the same when she posts a picture of her all dressed up hoping a boy will text her because he thinks she's beautiful. Each photograph taken has a message behind it and its completely up to photographer about what its meaning is.

This TED Talk video showed just how easy it is to make a statement through photography. Elephants are being poached for their ivory tusks which is very illegal. Photographers take picture of the gruesome leftover elephants that were murdered only for their ivory tusks. Photographers sent a message out to the world that this horrific poaching needs to stop. Photographs make more of an effect on people because they get to see first hand what horrible things are being done to these gentle giants. You could in worlds describe whats happening to the animals but with photography it makes whats happened almost ten times worse.

The saying "an image is worth a thousand words" is pretty accurate. Your most likely to believe a photograph of something over someones words. You can always trust an image to show the truth. Especially now in this world. People won't take your word for something unless there is picture proof because how can we be sure it happened if it wasn't photographed. If you can't trust your friends, if you can't trust the news, and if you can't trust the president then who do you trust? A photograph.

Assignment #23 - Can an Object Be Wrapped?

My biggest challenge throughout this who assignment was figuring out how to creatively come up with my own version of Christo and Jeanne - Claude's work. I didn't want to recreate something they've done before and wrap an object in the same material. I wanted to come up with my own unique wrapping material and a unique object that hasn't been wrapped before so I came up with the idea of wrapping a balloon in twine. After looking at the he two photographers work I came to the conclusion that the reason they call their work landscapes is because of the location that their wrapped work is located. It was important for me to find a landscape or a background that extenuated the balloon and twine. In the end I really learned why these two photographers are famous. There work is so extravagant and magnificent it really makes you stop and look at what they did and want to know why they wrapped an island or why they wrapped a big building.

For my idea with the water bottle I wanted to wrap fabric around the water bottle and do a plain back drop behind the water bottle so that it draws more attention to the shape of the wrapped water bottle. My second idea that I most likely am going to chose is wrapping twine around a water bottle and making it so that the balloon is disfigured because of how tight the twine is wrapped around the balloon.
